Sweet’s Dairy – Cornwall
“Gently pasteurised fresh whole milk,” the back of the bottle says. Sweet’s Dairy offers its farm fresh milk from Halt Road, just outside of St Newlyn East which is five miles south of Newquay in Cornwall. Halt road has a whiff of railway about it, which would be down the Great Western Railway’s former Newquay and Truro branch line that used to cut through the land at the bottom of the road. I’m told that the old station is remarkably intact amongst the undergrowth despite having closed in 1963.
The design on the front of the bottle features the East Wheal Rose stack and engine house, part of a former ore mine. On the 9th of July in 1846, an unusually heavy thunderstorm began, and it lasted for over an hour, causing the mine to flood. At the time, up to 200 miners were underground; although many escaped, 39 lost their lives.
Today visitors can visit the engine house to learn more about the history at nearby Lappa valley (1.3 miles away). Lappa valley also offers family-friendly fun, including steam train experiences, pedalo swan rides, and play parks for children.
